I was a contemporary of Russ at Forest, and was shocked to hear of his untimely passing. Whilst not close friends, I do remember Russ as a genial gentle and affable bloke. My main dealings with Russ were undoubtedly sporting, as I played 1st XI football, hockey and cricket.We all got to know of of his other main passion, namely sailing, from a very scary experience in a Fastnet race, if I remember rightly. This led to one of my favourite memories from school, when Russ, who was playing in goal in training, was lobbed, and in his frantic efforts to reach the ball, fell backwards, and (I'm sure it was Bill Maddison who shouted it!) the shout went up "man overboard!"
